Swim Aquatics

Did you know…
- The fist YMCA swimming pool was built in the Brooklyn YMCA in New York in 1885.
- Group-swimming lessons were first taught by George Corsan in 1910 for the YMCA. Teaching the crawl stroke first, contrary to the practice of the day, he laid the foundation for leveled swim instruction.
- In 1938, the new YMCA aquatics program was published. Swimmers at varying degrees of ability were known as Minnows, Fish and Sharks and these titles are still used today.
- The Odessa Family Y opened its pool in August of 1968. Throughout the upgrades over the years, the pool has not changed from its original design.
You can become part of the Aquatic tradition of the Odessa Family YMCA by registering for one of our Aquatic Programs today!
